In 1980s',some American firms fell into dilemma when competing with firms of Japan and other countries and realized that the very problem was not from employees not working hard, but the result of ill architecture of processes. Therefore, it is necessary to change drastically traditional working styles and redesign business processes. Business process reengineering (BPR) was just brought forward as a new business theory in this period. In China, Haier Group started with BPR in 1998 and has been the first Chinese firm to reengineer drastically. As a new working style, process management is based on information technology (IT), thus highly increasing social productivity. From this point, process management is a trend towards business management in the future and BPR is the main method of transforming working conditions in New Economy. This paper studies BPR with a purpose to clarify how new processes can be innovated and what factors influence BPR.In the first place, this paper reviews from the perspective of organizational transformation some theories such as "destructive innovation" theory, Chandler's "visible hand" theory, Business Process Reengineering(BPR) and Business X Reengineering theory brought forward by James Champy. All these are the basic theories on which BPR is based and which are also used in the analysis of haier's reengineering.Next, the paper introduces an advanced model for analyzing corporation competences by combining "3c" driving factors of BPR with the traditional model. The advanced model illustrates how the corporation competences can be developed with outside factors. The advanced model can be further used to analyze corporation competences from inside and outside firms. In addition, the advanced model is dynamic.Following it, this paper introduces from the perspective of business practice the background and development of Haier's BPR. It clarifies measures of Haier's BPR including market chain and SBU. Based on the above introductions, the paper analyzes two important questions challenging Haier's BPR, that is, information system and market chain. Finally, the author draws conclusions and points out the limitations and orientation of future research.
