Shanghai is one of the economical, financial, commercial centers of China. In 2010 Shanghai Expo will be held, Becoming an international metropolis is the developing trend for Shanghai. Now the agriculture of Shanghai has come into a new period, the production structure has been adjusted strategically, which challenges the managing method of traditional agriculture in Shanghai. Therefore, through the investigation of 121 towns in rural Shanghai in 2003, the paper evaluates the performance of different crops and order for rotation, which mainly includes three points.First, the paper analyses the performance of the main crops and order for rotation in Shanghai, and discovers that the performances of the main crops and order for rotation are widely different. The output and income of the cereal crops are obviously lower than those of the industrial crops. Profiting from the improvement of the mechanized level, the cereal crops ' per capita productivity ratio is higher than that of the industrial crops'. In addition, the paper finds the performance of crops and order for rotation is relevant to the costs of them.Second, the paper compares the performance of crops' cultivation under different planting mode separately. Emphatically it analyses how the plant scales, the planting mode, the marketing flow impact on the performance. And other factors are considered as well.Third, the paper analyses the regional difference between some typical crops' performance in Shanghai. And puts forward some corresponding suggestions to better the low performance. For instance, some counties and towns can reduce the crops area or optimize the production structure to increase the outputs and incomes.Based on the analysis above, some measures and suggestions on agriculture structure, managing mode and spatial distribution are put forward, those are:1.Retain the planting areas of cereal crops, and increase those of strawberries, watermelons, melons and vegetables.2.Explore moderate-scale management and regional development.3.Strengthen government's macro adjustments and controls, and coordinate the balance of interborough development. The evaluations in the paper have important realistic meanings to planning, managing, controlling and decision of Shanghai agriculture.
