The shipping industry, the basic industry of the national economy, is also by influenced inevitably. The degree that opening our shipping market is enlarging; The step that foreign shipping companies entry into our market is accelerating; The external and internal environment that our shipping company confront is changing, and so on. It can be predict that the competition in the China's shipping market will be more and more furious in the future. The problem that the shipping industry and the shipping companies of our country how to deal with the opportunity and the challenge after China's entry into the WTO has become a very important focus that the experts and scholars discuss frequently. The theory of core competence is maybe a key to the problem that our shipping companies how to develop in the future.The research of the core competence is originated in 1950s, and in the 1990s, the study about it reach its climax. Today, the theory of core competence has become a very important tool that can be used to analyze the competition and the development among the corporations. The core competence is the core competitive ability in a company, it is the origin that company can achieve the persistent competitive advantages. The core competence has the characteristics of value, specialty, extension and dynamic. With the depth of adjustment about global industrial structure, with the acceleration of process about global economy unionization, establishing the core competence and shaping the special competitive advantage, is the key that a company can survive and grow in the drastic market competition, the shipping companies is also confronted with the same situation.The article uses the criterion analysis and the demonstration analysis to study the core competence of the shipping companies. Firstly, the article improves the model of the Value -chain that came from professor Michael Porter, then the writer use the improved model to analyze a integrated operational process of a shipping company. Then we can find the Value-chain and the crucial step of the shipping company. This work is based on the process that analyze the integratedoperational process of a shipping company. Secondly, the paper studies the six kinds of ability elements that belong to the core competence of shipping companies, then the writer sets up a suit of index system to calculate the core competence of the shipping companies. Thirdly, the article uses this index system to calculate the core competence of the Top 10 Liner companies in the world. By these means, we can find the gap between the shipping companies in our country and the foreign companies in the aspect of the core competence.
