The development of technology and productivity, the improvement of custmomer consumption, the severity of competetion among enterprises, the greate change of political and economical entironment, many different advanced manufacturing technologies and management methods, such as FMS, JIT, MRPII etc., are adopted by enterprises in order to increase their competence. Management ideas also change to horizontal integration from vertical integration. Global manufacturing and supply chain mangement are typical examples of horizontal integration. Supply chain is a networks that composed of suppliers, manufactures, distributors, retailers and custmoers. Supply chain management is a focus of operation mangement. At present, research about supply chain, such as inventory, scheduling, coordination mangement, are mainly based on reduction methodology. There is a lack of whole behavior about supply chain, so it is important to research supply chain whole behavior based on system theory.Supply chain is a typical complex adaptive system. The CAS theory and method provide a new way for supply chain research. Guided by complex adaptive system theory, this thesis discussed the modeling and optimization problems o f supply chain. The main contents can be stated as follows. The chapter 1 is an introdution to the basic conception, research status, research method of cupply chain. The shortcomings of traditional research is pointed out. The mo tivation and main ideas of this thesis are presented.Chapter 2 describes the evolving progress of supply chain network, introduces the basic conception, main characteristics and enabling techonolgy of adaptive supply networks. Adaptive supply netork is the newest form of supply chain. Adaptability is an important requirement to improve competence of a supply chain. It is important and significant to study related problems deeply. In chapter 3, CAS theories and methods, including the concept of CAS and adaptive agent, stimulus-response model and the Echo model, as well as a useful simulation platform, SWARM, are discussed in detail.Chapter 4 is the main part of this thesis. The adaptive characters of supply chain is analyszed first. Then it is pointed out that supply chain is a typical complex adaptive system. Based on CAS theory, a multilayer hierarchical CAS model of supply chain is established. A stimulus-response model for each component agent is proposed. The mechanism and implementation of this model is discussed too. Last a operation and synthesis framework of this system is provided. In chapter 5, a supply chain dynamic configuration problem is studied. It is an important aspect of supply chain to adapt to dynamical environment. In this chapter, the meaning, principle, implementation method, are discussed step by step. A two-stage supply chain and a three-stage supply chain are used to demonstrate the useage of the proposed method.
