At the turn of this century, economic globalization keeps surging forward;awkward multi-systems have brought the prosperity of regional economiccooperation, thereby making regional and sub-regional economic cooperation themajor characteristics of global economic cooperation. Without exception, Asian-Pacific economic cooperation is transforming into sub-regional and bilateraleconomic cooperation. Therefore, China is facing the great challenges fromsub-regional cooperation. With such a view, this paper will, analyze theAsian-economic cooperation and its future, and submit some strategic suggestionsof China's mergence into the regional economy. This thesis is composed of six parts. Part one introduces 1) the basic conceptions of the economic cooperationpatterns in East Asia and Asian-pacific region, and 2) the existing studies on currentAsian-pacific economic cooperation. Part two shows the transformation in Asian-pacific economic cooperation.Demarcated by the financial crisis in East Asia in 1997, the cooperation is dividedinto two phases: the first climax of Asian-pacific cooperation and the subsequenttransformation. And the second phase is the focus of the analyses. Part three explores the internal and external causes of the transformation inAsian-pacific economic cooperation. Part four discusses the future development of Asian-pacific economiccooperation. Part five studies the strategies that China can choose when facing thechallenges from Asian-pacific economic cooperation. Part six concludes the thesis.
