In 1980s, people faced with more and more serious crisis of living environment and began to reflect on their development course reasonably. In 1987, the World Commission on Environment and Development firstly used the concept of sustainable development in the report of Our Common Future, which meant meeting the needs of the present generation without impairing the ability for future generations to meet their own needs. Then the whole world soon accepted the idea of sustainable development. Now sustainable development has become the guiding principle and strategic objective for each country and region to formulate its economic and social development plan.As an industry, tourism needs to accord with the strategy of sustainable development of the whole society. The sustainable development of tourism is raised on the bases of the theory of sustainable development and the grave problems brought out by the development of tourism. It pays more attention to the protection of the natural and cultural environment and the maintenance of the future development potentials while meeting the present needs of tourists and local inhabitants. The ideal objective pursued by sustainable development of tourism is to achieve the harmony of economic benefits, ecological protection and social effects.The Tibet Autonomous Region is extremely rich in unique and diversified tourism resources and has great advantages in developing tourism. Over the past 20 years with China's opening-up and reform, Tibet tourism has developed very fast and obtained great achievements. It hasalso played an important role in promoting Tibetan economic and social development. But at the same time, there are many problems and restricted factors exited in Tibet tourism, such as the deterioration of ecological environment, lacking of scientific planning on exploiting tourism resources, and poor traffic conditions, which hinder the further healthy development of Tibet tourism. Now tourism at home and abroad is growing prosperously and China is enforcing powerful policies to exploit its western regions. How to grasp these golden opportunities to overcome the short-sighted behaviors and realize the sustainable development of Tibet tourism is becoming an urgent task.Under the guidance of the theory of sustainable development, this paper describes tourism resources and tourism development conditions in Tibet, then analyzes the existing problems in Tibet tourism, next points out that Tibet tourism should follow the guide-lines of sustainable development, finally puts forward some suggestions and countermeasures, hoping to be helpful for the healthily sustainable development of Tibet tourism.This paper consists of four parts. The first part is an introduction, which illustrates the background of the dissertation's topic choosing and its significance; introduces the major contents of the dissertation; generalizes the research methods which the writer employs. Chapter one makes a classification of Tibet tourism resources and gives a general introduction of it; summarizes the four characteristics of Tibet tourism resources. Chapter two reviews and analyzes the development progress of Tibet tourism and its present situation; explores seven unsolved problems in Tibet tourism. Chapter three introduces the origin and the basic meaning of sustainabledevelopment; points out that sustainable development is an inevitable choice for Tibet tourism based on the theory of tourism sustainable development; explains the advantages of Tibet tourism in sustainable development, puts forward some suggestions and countermeasures which aim to solve the existing problems and help to realize the sustainable development of Tibet tourism.This paper's theoretical innovation includes: applying the theory of sustainable development to practice, indicating that following the road of sustainable development is an inevitable choice for Tibet tourism; and putting forward some suggestions and countermeasures which help to realize the sustainable development of Tibet tourism and have certain references.
