Military outfit, a general term for weapons, weapon system and military technical equipment used for fighting and its logistic support, can be divided up into fighting outfit and logistic outfit. The outfit thought includes the ordinary guiding rules of the development, use and regulation of military outfit, the degree to which the factor of outfit influences the result of war, the relation of outfit to war outlook, strategy and tactics, etc. Combining with military strategy, military philosophy and political thought are the basic characteristics of the outfit thought in the pre-Qin times.It used to be said that Sima's Art of War was 'by Sima Rangju'. According to the materials from The Zuo Commentary and Records of the Historian, it can be mainly concluded that Sima Rangju is a descendant of Chen Wan, that his military career was during a period between 532 B.C., or the 13th year of the reign of King Jing I of Zhou, and 490 B.C., or the 30th year of the reign of King Jing II of Zhou, and that Sima's Art of War of present editions should be a mixture of the earlier tactics of Sima related by the Great Officers of the State of Qi and Rangju's military thought. All present editions come from The Seven Military Classics of Ancient China, published in the Song Dynasty, and they can be sorted into two systems, i.e. three-volume-editions and one-volume-editions. The principal contents of the book contain the war outlook that is directed by the thought of Benevolence Foundation, the thought of force management that lays equal stress on ritual and statute and the theory of Battle Contemplation that weighs up Qing and Zhong.The fighting outfit Sima's Art of War refers to includes bayoneting and grappling weapons and shooting weapons, and the former consist of long weapons and short weapons, distinguished by their antipersonnel distances, which are just relative concepts without strict definition. As pieces of logistic outfit, banner, flag, gong and drum are signals in effect. The first two are visual signals, while the last two are hearing signals. Besides, the book refers to other pieces of logistic outfit such as badge and cart as well.
