Security In Central Asia And Shanghai Cooperation Organization

Central Asia is the west neighbor of our country. Since the Soviet Union broke down, the political status of this area has changed dramatically. The world pays more and more attention to the security situation of Central Asia. Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was founded on June 15, 2001. This is the first regional regime that our country initiated with other countries. The function of this organization is to stabilize the security environment and help our country to take part in the world society as an important role.The thesis provides a view of the security situation of the Central Asia, and analyzes the inner connection between the SCO and the security situation of Central Asia. Also, it makes some suggestion on the development of this organization. This thesis contains four parts. Part 1 focuses on the features of the Central Asia geography politics and the inner and outer factors that influence the security situation. The inner factors indicate the"three forces", transnational criminal, Caspian Sea issue and the regional political unstableness, i.e. the"color revolution". The outer factors include Afghanistan war, Caucasian turbulence and competition of the main powers and there influences on the security of this area.Part 2 portrays the founding and development of the SCO, the whole process consists of 3 phases: boundary negotiation,"Shanghai five Nation"summit meeting and institutionalization of the SCO. The function of this organization has expanded from security to economy, culture etc. Part 3 shows the achievements that the SCO has made on the security issue, meanwhile it indicates the challenges that it has to confront. In the end, also makes some prediction on the Central Asia Security situation and provides the outlook of the SCO development.Part 4 discusses the connection between the SCO and our country, especially the western area. The northwest security and petroleum security of our country are link closely to Central Asia. The SCO provides a platform for cooperation to solve these issues.
