China is a vast country with long history and the relations between China and neighboring countries have experienced long historical changes. Historically speaking, Northeast Asia is very important for China. It is not only because of the fastened geographical tie by natural, but also because of the inevitable integration of history and culture. Northeast Asia has been the focus of China's foreign strategy in the long history river, but in modern times the relations between Northeast Asia and other countries were extremely complicated due to its relative weakness and the involvement of the major powers. In the mean time, the national security of China also faced different challenges and threats. In this paper, the author will divide the long history into several different stages:the Sui and Tang to the Qing Dynasty, Qing Dynasty to the end of World War II, the end of World War II to the Cold War, post-Cold War era. The relations between China and Northeast Asia present different features in these different stages. For example, From Sui to Qing Dynasty: There is a tribute system ruled by the band between China and Northeast Asia and China was the center in the system. There formed a set of unique oriental order; From Qing Dynasty to the end of World War II:This is a period of time full of conflicts. During this time, China's weakness was in sharp contrast to the rise of Japan due to the involvement of other big powers. The situation in Northeast Asia became complicated and Japan became the hegemony in Northeast Asia; from the end of World War II to the Cold War: The characteristic of this stage is bipolar. Ideology is the most distinctive label in the region at this stage; post-Cold War era:The powers have been integrating after the end of cold war and the most prominent feature is the game among Great Powers. The cold war thinking is still playing a role in Northeast Asia. China is also adjusting the strategy in Northeast Asia to the changing situations. Overall, the author will compare those different features above mentioned in vertically and horizontally history perspective. And the author also will compare those features from the institutional level of the tributary system and cultural dimensions of Confucian culture. The approaches in this paper include the text analysis and qualitative analysis.According to the analysis mentioned above, the tribute system has become China's foreign strategy and security thread because it maintained the longest. Besides, we should discover and use more valuable things from the Confucian culture which is the common culture origin of Northeast Asian countries. To sum up, Northeast Asia has not only always been extremely important for the safety of the northeast China but also for the national security of China.
