With the development and advancement of the new curriculum reform, thenew curriculum idea has gradually been accepted and it has been acknowledged thatteaching and learning should be based on students'self‐study and inquiry learning.To reflect the new curriculum idea in detail, a new column called"case study"isspecially set in senior geography textbooks published by PEP."Case study"hasgradually become the common focus of geography teachers. This article is aimed at"case study"and does research on theoretical bases of"case study", classification of"case study", teaching investigation of"case study", analysis on teaching cases of"case study"and suggestions on"case study". In terms of research methods,document analysis research method, action research method, questionnaire method,experience summary methods are all involved.This research is based on learning from other studies. The author analyzestheoretical bases of"case study", carries out research on classifications of"casestudy"and develops questionnaire investigations among teachers and students atrandom. By analyzing an example"Where do you prefer to live, downtown orcountryside?", the present teaching situation is reproduced and its causes areanalyzed. Having stated the differences between"case study"and regular geographyteaching, teaching suggestions on"case study"are given. Firstly, lay stress on and put"case study"into practice. Secondly, pay attention to effective combination ofteaching materials. Thirdly, turn text‐text research into social practice. Fourthly, focusattention on students'exposure to learning process and approaches. Last but not theleast, take seriously the overall cultivation of students'emotions, attitudes, values,teamwork and cooperative abilities.With teaching practice and afterthoughts, this research is intended to helpfront‐line geography teachers understand the importance and practicality of setting"case study"more clearly and thoroughly so that this column can be carried out in abetter way and serve as a guide in geography teaching.
