The study of Chinese is always closely associated with reading, without which the language and literature can never be learnt. Thus, reading is the key element and also the important method in the Chinese learning. Curriculum Criterion of Chinese-learning for Middle School and Primary School in Shanghai clearly indicates that students should acquire certain reading ability and foster their knowledge of Chinese by reading. Upon that, many more reading contexts are added to the teaching material designed by the Second Curriculum Revision so as to cultivate students'comprehension ability and improve their Chinese expertise. However, the idea of advocating reading not only brings about confusion in the daily teaching but various reading problems of the students as well. In order to solve that, whether it be subjective or objective, we should re-evaluate students'reading ability based on the present background before putting forward new strategies. The following dissertation, with the Grade Five students in Yifu rimary School being the object of study, based on the reorganization of the domestic and foreign essays on cooperative learning and through the analysis of students'current situation of reading and learning, discusses the reading ability which students are required to obtain, re-interprets the reading ability proposed in the new curriculum standard and manifests the accomplishment together with experience gained by practicing in the manner of cooperative learning. The dissertation is composed of the following five parts:Part 1 illustrates the background, aims, meaning, and summary of the reference of the dissertation.Part 2 introduces the practical research design. The design is resulted from the definition of reading ability and the present status of learning and teaching in Chinese reading. This part also re-interprets the reading ability proposed in the new curriculum standard.Part 3 discusses the research on in-class cooperative learning in terms of outline and principles, specific samples, the improvementon reading ability and the practical conditions and the effect.Part 4 discusses the research on cooperative learning in extra curricula in terms of outline and principles, specific samples, the improvement on reading ability and the practical conditions and the effect.Part 5 sums up the design and practice of the research as well as its effect. The accomplishments of the dissertation are as follows. First, the essay, combined with the students'reading problem and the new curriculum criterion re-defines the requirement which fits students'reading ability and thus provides the teachers with the reference on how to set goals and test criteria. Second, the students'study interests, motivation, results and the reading ability are much improved by the cooperative learning deployed in either in-class teaching or extra curricula activities. Third, the dissertation, by a series of practice, sets up a cooperative learning method which conforms to the idea of the Second Curriculum Revision, which complies with the curriculum standard, which is suitable for textbook teaching and which, thus, can offer a better reference to the teachers who work with the Second Curriculum Revision.
