Teacher's edition plays a very important role in primary and secondary education for a teacher. A good teacher's edition can help the teachers to understand the curriculum standards accurately. It also can help the teachers to make a teaching plan with the provided strategies and references. The current teacher's edition can not satisfy the need of the school teachers. Therefore, the author attempts to study the American teacher's edition and compare with Chinese teacher's editiontry to find out the weakness of Chinese teacher's edition. The author selected the Teacher's Edition for Chinese published by Shanghai Education Press(SEP) and the Teacher's Edition for Language Arts published by Houghton Mifflin Company(HM) as a model to analyze the characteristic of each teacher's edition and to work out some useful suggestions.The Thesis is divided into six parts. The first part is introduction. In this part, it introduces the reasons and meaning of this study and other research of teacher's edition study.The second part mainly discusses the development of teacher's edition research in both China and the U.S.A.The third part analyzes the framework of teacher's edition of both Chinese and Language Arts. The Chinese teacher's edition and the Language Arts teacher's edition contain the same characteristic on contents structure, stage structure and teaching structure. The differences between Language Arts teacher's edition and Chinese teacher's edition are on the whole structure and the theme references structure.The fourth part describes the details of the two teacher's edition. There are three main aspects in details including the expression of the materials, stage introduction and teaching strategies. The fifth part describes the format of the two teacher's edition. Chinese teacher's edition mainly uses the words to introduce the teaching suggestions and that make the whole book very boring. Language Arts teacher's edition uses not only the words but also the pictures and the tables to provide the teaching strategies. And the books are very colorful. But it's easy to carry the Chinese teacher's edition but the Language Arts teacher's edition not.The sixth part is the conclusion part. The author thinks that both the two kinds of teacher's editions are very useful. They both have a clear framework, particular details. But the weaknesses of Chinese teacher's edition are on the format and the details. According to the compared study, the author works out two changing suggestions. One is to add some picutres or tables to make the book more clearly. Another is to provide more teaching strategies.
