The TfU teaching mode was developed in the early1990s at Project Zero, a research organization housed within the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. With TfU, genuine disciplinary understanding for all students is the primary goal of classroom work. The TfU teaching mode has four parts which are Generative Topics, Understanding Goals, Performances of Understanding and Ongoing Assessment.The contents of the Structure and Properties of Matter in high school chemistry elective module3are abstract and abstruse. In addition, there contains intensive theories. What’s worse, some contents, which are far away from students’existing experience and thinking levels, are even the basis of Structural Chemistry, a kind of course in the university. All of these bring various difficulties and troubles to both teachers and students. While, what the TfU teaching mode mainly focuses on is to make all students really understand the subject. Therefore, applying the TfU teaching mode to the teaching of the Structure and Properties of Matter contributes certain research significance.Firstly, the author reviews the TfU framework, the Structure and Properties of Matter in china by studying a large numbers of literatures. Then, the paper organizes a theoretical base which applies the TfU teaching mode to the teaching of the Structure and Properties of Matter from six aspects. The six aspects are the content of textbook analysis, feasibility analysis, implementation conditions, the basic procedure of the TfU framework, teaching strategies and evaluation. Based the theory, the teaching designs which applying the TfU teaching mode to the teaching of the Structure and Properties of Matter are presented. At last, the TfU teaching mode is implemented in teaching practice and study on the effect of application. The results prove that it can improve the ability of students’ understanding and help student master chemical knowledge. Therefore, students can receive higher grades.
