In the research field of foreign language teaching, linguists have found many non-cognitive factors that can exert influence on the results of foreign language learning, among which the most influential is learning motivation. As high education in China has been more popularized to mass, the development of secondary vocational schools attaches public attention. The ratio of vocational students in the total has been rising with each passing year, thus they are faced with more requirements from the society in their qualities and abilities, foreign language aptitude being a crucial one. It is, therefore, an instant task to study and foster the motivation of foreign language learning of vocational students.Based on theories of learning motivation at home and abroad, this thesis has collected the data by questionnaires on foreign language learning motivations from vocational students in in Pukou Secondary Vocational School. Through the data analysis, it is concluded the types, factors and intensity of their foreign language learning motivations, and summarized that their major motivations are employment, yet there are also such defects as ambiguous learning aspiration, weak learning motivation and perfunctory learning attitude In addition, the thesis, on the basis of the analysis of the problems and causes existing in foreign language learning of vocational students from the teachers-and-students interview records, generalizes such characters of vocational students as undefined learning target, short-sighted learning motivation, weak willpower and unsteady emotional features. With regard to the aim of vocational education to cultivate application-oriented talents and the unique features of this educated group, the thesis proposes corresponding teaching methods—stratified teaching and task-based teaching, combined with appreciation teaching in the whole education process, in order to foster and stimulate the steady and constant learning motivation of students through adjusted teaching activities of foreign language teachers.
