Higher education in the twenty-first century is directing to life-long training, democratization, and modernization. Against this background, the education circles in our country have established the concepts of quality-oriented education and lifelong education, which vigorously pushs forwards the reform and development of school physical education.Physical education plays an important role in school curriculum while football general course is one of the major courses for P.E. major. In the general stage, students will master the basic theories, techniques, and skills of football. The ultimate objective of football general course is to, through theoretical and practical study of football, enable students to understand the basic rules about football, master the principal theories and basic techniques of football, and put certain skills into use so that they will be able to teach and guide football activities.Due to the wide distribution of professional sports colleges and universities, as well as the great developmental discrepancy between different regions, the Curriculum Plan implemented in different regions vary from school to school. The distinction in teaching objectives and contents is likely to lead to unsatisfactory learning outcome. What’s more, the outcome of varied class hours is short of valid argumentation, resulting in the waste or insufficiency of class hours. In addition, the lack of specific teaching objectives in football general course, the neglect of the need of students and the society, and the fact that most students regard the football general course as only a means of accumulating the credits without a clear learning target, have attracted extensive attention.Based on the present situation of the teaching of football general course for P.E. major in Jilin Province, by the methods of documentation, questionnaire, expert interview and mathematical statistics, the thesis studied the teaching staff, learning interest of the students, teaching objectives, teaching contents, teaching methods and approaches, and the comments on football general course for P.E. major in Jilin Province, and contrasted the students and the teachers, leading to the following conclusions.With regard to the construction of a high-quality staff, the age structure is reasonable, with young and middle-aged teachers working in the forefront of teaching. Besides, the teachers have excellent academic backgrounds and the competence for the scientific research and teaching of P.E. major. Apart from this, the structure of professional title is relatively reasonable, which enables new employees to learn from the experienced and encourages a sense of earnest and dedication.The class hour and the curricula time vary enormously, with a few colleges and universities having less class hours. Most students have the correct learning attitude and clear academic motivation, and the preference for football practice course.However, the teaching objectives are not qualified to fully implement the Outline, and most colleges have a hazy understanding in concepts such as psychological health, physical health and sports participation, which is to the disadvantage of the cultivation of practical ability and creative ability. In respect of the teaching contents, the theory teaching takes only a small part and attaches great importance to the integration of practice and theory, which reflects indirectly the indifference towards theoretical knowledge. In contrast, the techniques and tactics play a great part, making it easy to master the techniques and having important implications for the cultivation of the teaching ability.With traditional teaching method still dominating, the teaching method as a whole is rigid. The form of teaching is onefold. Although innovative teaching methods get involved in the football general course for the P.E. major in Jilin Province, they are not extensively used. In relation to the teaching assessment, technical examination is of vital significance. Some colleges pay little attention to the theoretical tests, resulting in the imperfection of the contests and the methods of test. Furthermore, most colleges and universities are in desperate need of evaluation of students’ basic capacity and self-assessment.
