A Study On The Education Of Hui Nationality In Xi'an During The Republic Of China

The late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China witnessed a great resolution in China. The traditional social system and ideology received the unprecedented impact. Faced with the severe situation of both domestic strife and foreign aggression, the national consciousness of the Chinese society began to awaken, and the intellectuals and far-sighted personage from all walks of life began to look for the path of salvaging the country. Regarding the revitalization of the nation, and the development of the religious as own duty, the Hui ethnicity in this period promoted the modernization process of hui nationality with all their strength. This paper, taking hui people in Xi’an as an example, mainly discussed the development of modern education during the period of the republic of China in Xi’an.The first part introduced the education of Hui ethnicity in Xi’an in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. Xi’an is the earliest area that Islam is introduced. Since Hu Dengzhout, the famous master of Confucian classics, had initiated scripture hall education, Xi’ an was once the center of scripture hall education and islamic academic culture research. During the Ming and Qing dynasty, the education of hui people in Xi’ an was mainly in the forms of old-style private school education, scripture hall education, private school charging no tuition. These education modes had turned out many hui talents. After a failed uprising by Shaanxi Hui ethnicity, the center of scripture hall education also transferred accordingly. The Hui education in Xi’an region began to decline gradually. The Hui education in Xi’ an region revived by the early years of the republic of China.The second part, the key part of this paper, mainly introduced and analyzed the development of modern education of Hui ethnicity in Xi’ an region during the period of the republic of China. It mainly stated from the background of the new rising in the Hui education, the development of school education, the famous hui educator.Under the influence of the new culture movement, the modern education of Hui ethnicity in Xi’an keep up with the development of that throughout the nation. In general, Hui education in Xi’an during the period of the republic of China developed relatively slowly, but its development laid a solid foundation for the later development of Xi’an Hui education.The third part, according to the developing situation of Xi’ an Hui education during the period of the republic of China, summarized its development characteristics, analyzed the factors affecting the development of Xi’ an Hui education, and the contemporary enlightenment of the Hui education was put forward. Education is a kind of social activity. The development of education is closely related to the political, economic, and cultural factors of a society, in particular, economic factors which is the precondition of the development of education. Second, to develop the Hui education, the first thing is to realize the particularity of the Hui education. Besides, the educational concept should be changed and the national teachers should be cultivated systematically. Only in this way, can the Hui education be developed effectively.The last part comprehensively summarized the content of the former three parts, and further pointed out that the research on Hui education in Xi’an during the period of the republic of China was significant for the development of contemporary national education.
