The importance of the entrance examination of China has been developed with the increasing of china economy. With the introduction of a new entrance examination of Chinese policy programs, the shortcomings of the existing remains highly controversial voice, of which the most serious is the derail of theoretical knowledge and practice. The new round of reform of basic education is soon to begin. Curriculum standards and textbooks reform is the core foundation of education reform. Research and development of new textbooks is an important task of curriculum reform, which is also an important part of the curriculum reform.Biology is an important subject in high school. Basic educational curriculum of biology plays a vital role for future promotion and development of biotechnology. In order to cultivate students’ innovative spirit and practical ability, the target of high school biology education is not only to focus on developing the tradition of students’ biological knowledge and skills, but also to focus on improving the quality of all citizens’ and ultimately achieve the purpose of improving the overall national strength. Therefore, biology education reform will eventually be put on the agenda.At present, China and the United States are actively promoting the new curriculum reform. Teaching as a carrier of educational content, has a pivotal role in the curriculum reform. Shanghai is an international metropolis, whether economic or education are standing in the national forefront. In order to advocate for advanced high school learning concept of biology, cultivate a good biological quality of citizens, collect the latest ideas in the field of education, we make a comparative study of Shanghai and the United States high school biology textbooks to provide a reference for national college entrance examination reform. We hope to expand an international perspective view of Shanghai urban students through this study and provide a reference for the preparation of future reform of Shanghai high school biology curriculum materials.This paper adopts literature analysis to study the Chinese college entrance examination reform, Shanghai and the United States high school biology curriculum reform, training concept and the development process of starting materials. The biology high school textbooks of Shanghai and United States use the method of description, comprehensive comparison, illustration and statistics studying aspects from the apparent designs, teaching materials, experiments and student satisfactions for Shanghai high school biology textbooks. We also make a comparative study of US and Shanghai high school biology textbooks. Conclusion: Shanghai high school biology textbooks reflect local characteristics, but there are not enough, for instance, forum directory lack scientific illustration, taxonomic boundaries blur, theoretical overweight for content, lack of experimental richness and so on.By analyzing and comparing the features of advantages and disadvantages of American and Shanghai high school biology textbooks, we learn from the successful experience of American high school biology textbook reform. Combining with Chinese actual situation, we make constructive criticisms on the reform and development of Shanghai high school biology textbooks. For instance, textbooks’ forum needing to improve; full directory indexing; increasing teaching materials particularly in relation to the STS forum; using the analogy of thinking to make the contents of visualization; increasing the type of experiment; focusing experimental skills training and so on.
