Since the modern times, in the process of realizing the transition from traditional China to modern China, national character always play a important role. Today, china is in an important transitional historical development, the question of national character of Chinese has once again become a hot topic in modern discourse. In the new era background, renewing the national character and the relationship between national character and education, it may be necessity and meaningful.This paper focused on the reflection and transformation of national character, mainly discussed the necessity and possibility in the process of national character’ transmission though education. The paper firstly analysed the connotations end characteristics of national character, then on the basis of concluding and presenting the judgment to national character from scholars in modern times, proposed three criteria to judge the performance of national character, that is: to promote social progress and development, to improve and perfect personality of students, to achieve modernization of the people. Then, on the basis of the three standards, the four fundamental weaknesses of the national character in China were put forward. That is: public consciousness is weak, the beaten track is followed, independent personality owes deficiency, lack of scientific spirit, and expounded the root cause respectively. To make this point as a basis, on the analysis of the necessity and possibility of education reforming citizens, this paper discussed the concrete means and way of national character from three aspects, which is the statement of education purpose, curriculum and textbook and teacher training.This paper ’studies suggest that education and the national character is a causal relationship. A certain amount of education shaped the national character, according, national character also creates a certain education. In order to realize national reconstruction, we should first transform the education itself. It seems to be a history of circulation, to break the causal loop, it requires that our education must be geared to the needs of the future, education must be advanced. It requires the educators has its own one kind of aware consciousness of critical reflection in the place of his culture, and this kind of consciousness should be integrate into the education and teaching practice.
