Chinese character, as the writing symbolic system for recording Chinese, is one of indispensable parts of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages. But the difficulties of its writing and identifying have been weak links in its teaching process, both for the foreign students whose learning targets are clear, and for the ordinary high school learners. Being a member of the Chinese-character cultural circle, Chinese character is still one of the compulsory subjects in high schools of South Korea, There exist numerous kinds of problems even with the foundation of Chinese character. In recent years, a number of studies about teaching Chinese character in both South Korea and some other countries’ high schools come into existence. However, studies aiming at students of the ordinary high school in South Korea which learn Chinese as the second foreign language are rare. The author took the chance of one-year teaching in an ordinary high school in South Korea, and did a small scale research among the same batch of Chinese volunteer teachers. Besides, a follow-up research on Chinese character’s teaching in the author’s school was made. The author summarizes the existing problems in the course of teaching the ordinary high schools’ students Chinese character. Finally, the corresponding teaching suggestions are made for teaching the South Korean general Chinese learners, which might have a significant guidance.The paper studies the following four parts:The first part expounds the purpose and significance of the topic and research status of this topic, from the Chinese character’s teaching in Korea and high schools abroad, with the introduction to the related research work of this paper, including contents, methods, theoretical basis and innovations.The second part is detailed description about the status of Chinese characters teaching in South Korean ordinary high school. Firstly, online questionnaires are sent to the same batch of 101 volunteers working in the ordinary high school to investigate their Chinese character’s teaching situation, then it also talks about the design of the questionnaire, the survey process, and analyses the results, followed by tracking and reporting about the teaching situation of Chinese character in Jeonju high school where the author worked as a Chinese teacher.The third part summarizes the common problems in the process of Chinese characters teaching in ordinary high school, integrated with personal experience, the results of the questionnaire as well as the visits to volunteers.The fourth part is about recommendations on the positive influence of mother tongue, attitude, teaching content and teaching techniques to deal with the problem for Chinese volunteer teachers and their partner teacher in the process of teaching Chinese as a second foreign language.This paper aims to give some guidance to the teaching of Chinese as a second foreign language with the help of the investigation and research to the teaching situation of Chinese characters in South Korean ordinary high schools.
