This dissertation is focused on the cityspace theory of Edward W. Soja, and explores what Soja’s theory inherit and carry forward to the space theory. It will discuss the significance and value of Soja’s studies on the cities and regions, especially in the Los Angeles metropolitan area which represented the postmetropolis. At the same time, for understanding Soja’s cityspace theory clearly, I will interpret and illustrated some new theories, such as "the trialetics of spatiality", " the stimulations of urban agglomeration" and "six discourses on the postmetropolis ".This article is divided into four chapters: the first chapter briefly looks back over Soja’s academic career and introduces Soja’s cityspace theory, especially the thirdspace theory, and the formation of this thought. Second chapter and the third chapter can be classified as the practical application of the trialetics of cityspace theory, and the two chapters are also the core part of this paper. Under the guidance of cityspace thought, the second chapter remaps the geohistory of cityspace. At the same time, cities and urbanism started ten thousand years ago, three urban revolutions were mainly caused by the stimulus of urban agglomeration, the conventional ideas of human development history is being redefined and challenged, and it’s a real practice to Soja’s cityspace idea. The third chapter makes an overview of the reconstruction of city during the development of the industrial capitalism and shows the situations of postmetropolitan areas represented by Los Angeles. In the fourth reconstruction of geohistory of cities, the urbanism, as a way of life, emerges, that is what Soja called as postmetropolis. For understanding the theory of lived space of postmetropolis of Soja, this chapter also explains the six discourses of postmetropolis, and analyzes postmetropolis in the crisis and Los Angeles schools, and foresees the development of the application of Soja’s theory of cityspace.
