According to the national curriculum standards, art appreciation course is thecompulsory content that is recommended in high school art courses, which shows theimportance of art appreciation classes. Art appreciation teaching focuses on students’understanding of different art works and art phenomenon. In the course of feeling,experiencing and appreciating of art works, students can form their ideas about art,improve their ability to appreciate art and their humanistic literacy. It also enhancesstudents’ love of the national culture and their respect and understanding of themulticultural world.As a professional teacher, I have more than ten years’ experience of teaching artappreciation course. Meanwhile I constantly try and explore teaching methods for thepurpose of improving the atmosphere in the classroom to get a better effect. And Ifind that the creation of teaching situation in the classroom is of great help to ourteaching. This paper is mainly about my research on how to create a more effectiveteaching situation on the basis of my teaching practice, with ways of researchingcombined with teaching, overviews of documents, questionnaire investigation andinterviews with teachers. It aims to discuss the practical needs, principles, methodsand meaningfulness of the creation of teaching situation in the classroom. Also, theproblems that may be encountered in practice, the requirements of our teachers and soon are mentioned.Firstly, based on the constructive theory, the meaning, the characteristic and mainmethods of Situational Teaching are analyzed on the aspects of theory and practice.Secondly, it analyzes the teaching of art appreciation course at high schools, includingthe present situation of art appreciation course teaching at today’s high schools, thepsychological characteristics of students and their interest and hobbies, thecharacteristics of art appreciation course, the creation of teaching situation and otheraspects. The last part is the focus of this article. On the one hand, it shows the basicprinciples of the creation of teaching situation in art appreciation course at highschools--to be attractive, relevant, purposeful, real and effective, consistent with students’ psychological and cognitive characteristics. On the other hand, a fewexamples from my teaching practice of how to create teaching situation are presented--the help of multimedia, the understanding of cultural background, the way ofexperiencing, the use of real scene and the description in language. In addition, I putforward some suggestions and ideas, as well as my problems in the implementation ofthese methods.In short, considering the characteristics and the reality of art courses at today’shigh schools, I find it essential to create more proper teaching situation in artappreciation course on the basis of analyzing the teaching content and students’characteristics. Therefore, it will help to develop students’ interest, to motivate theirthinking, to encourage them to take an active part in art appreciation activities, and ofcourse it will help students have a better understanding when feeling and experiencingart works. In spite of various methods, it is important to know how to use themflexibly according to practical teaching, thus achieving a better effect.
