As a humanity "laying spiritual foundation for students", Chinese course is a significant way of inheriting and learning traditional culture. The Chinese textbook in senior high school is not only the carrier for disciplinary knowledge, but also the precious material for the education of traditional culture. Therefore, absorbing adequate element of traditional culture into senior high school Chinese textbook is necessary for the self-development of the Chinese course, as well as for the development of students and the country.Based on the present research and exploration of Chinese textbook in mainland China, this thesis turns to focus on Taiwan, where traditional culture is the most comprehensively retained. By the lights of comparative study approach and content analysis approach, literature of high school language textbook of Taiwan and mainland China were collected. Research focuses and uncovered aspects related with traditional culture were identified. Meanwhile, historical changes of Taiwan senior high school Chinese course syllabus were understood, as a broad theoretical background. Combined with Taiwan’s latest edition textbooks, the traditional culture element contained in the Chinese textbook will be analyzed from two aspects:form and content.Classical Chinese is the key point of content analysis. On the one hand, the proportion of Classical Chinese in the whole textbook will be calculated, in comparison with that in mainland China. The quantity variance between these two will be explicated. On the other hand, the present dominant culture in Taiwan will also be analyzed through five aspects, including view of life values, moralization, political culture, military culture and hermit culture. The retention of Taiwan for traditional culture and its influences on society were verified, and were compared with that of mainland China. The element of traditional culture in Chinese textbook in mainland China is much lower than that in Taiwan. The emphases on those five aspects are different, while Chinese textbook in Taiwan is broader, more comprehensive and more realistic.From the perspective of format, the traditional atmosphere of the textbook will be analyzed through the composition of complex characters and the layout of antique pictures. Complex character, as the most historic content of the carrier, shows a very inspiring cultural charm. The layout of antique pictures and other materials give considerably more traditional culture embellishment to the textbook.Finally, by introspecting the culture in senior high school Chinese textbooks across the strait, especially the cultural character of textbook in Taiwan, experiences could learned and recommendations could be provided for the construction of Chinese textbook in mainland China, in the respect of richer Classical Chinese, as well as more meticulous and comprehensive, reading-assistant system and layout design.
