Living in this era of rapid development of science and technology, someone just wants to depend on the knowledge learned in school in order to meet the demand of future work and life, which is not possible at all. In our daily life, we often need to accept the new knowledge and skills, which we never heard as we were ever studying at school. If we hope to adapt to the rapid updating of information and the rule of survival and development of instant obsolete in "knowledge explosion" times, we must have the ability of lifelong learning. But lifelong learning depends on the learner’s ability of autonomous learning. Therefore, autonomous learning plays an important role to our comprehensive development, it has become a basic ability of one’s surviving in the 21st century."Basic Education Curriculum Reform" clearly states that there will be to change the overemphasis of students’acceptance to learning contents in traditional classroom, and advocate to give students the chances of active participation and independently inquiry as far as possible. At present, the reasons about both the limited class hour about senior geography and students’ low interest to geography make the degree of students’autonomous participation still very low. During the class, Most teachers are still teaching all class long as before, very few teachers have arranged cooperative learning, which belongs to active exploration, but, just a mere formality.On the basis of comprehensive statement of the articles about geography autonomous learning at home and abroad, with the help of the theory of Education and Psychology about students’autonomous learning, this paper selected the students who study in a senior middle school of Baoji City, Shaanxi Province as research objects, and used the methods about interviews and questionnaires to carry out the investigations.And the paper summarized that the reasons why students’autonomous learning ability is poor contributed to four aspects of the students themselves, school and teacher education, family education, social public opinion, the performance for the society, families and schools are the geographical subjects as minor, attention degree is not enough; the geography class is very limited, so that the teacher save class time cost for stripping process, take students’ independent inquiry, directly gives the study conclusion such a class, will further reduce the students learning geography class interest, making it more difficult to attract students to self exploration and learning knowledge of geography. Aiming at the problems produced by the roots and, respectively, in view of the above-mentioned four aspects put forward measures and methods to cultivate students’ autonomous ability of geography. Finally, this paper selected teaching design differences of natural geographical environment of as the carrier, in the teaching of each link show how flexible to cultivate students’ ability of autonomous learning of geography, in the actual teaching needs to pay attention to what the problem.Previous research mostly only considered cultivating students’ autonomous learning ability with the viewpoint of teacher behavior, but this paper thinks that the implementation is more important is how to make the students’ consciousness, and the ability of autonomous learning in geography, but also very necessary to analyze and solve problems from the Department of family and social environment background. Therefore, this article gave specific measures and suggestions from the four bellowed-mentioned aspects, which are that the transformation of teaching methods, teachers’ teaching idea of teachers, change the learning process, students’ geography learning concepts of preparation before class, class to participate in after-school consolidation in reflection, of family education and social influence. From the two aspects of theory and application of how to cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability in geography explains, the paper hopes to make the geography teachers in Middle School Geography Classroom Role clear relationship between primary and secondary, can really put the cultivation of students’ autonomous learning ability requirements. For the requirements of the times and scientific knowledge of the students’ lifelong learning ability cultivation biggest contribution for geography.
