With the progress of era and the development of science and technology, the knowledge innovation and the transformation of education concept were determined; meanwhile, the corresponding middle school history teaching is also on the path of the curriculum reform. New curriculum is based on students development and aims to improve students learning interest and improve their historical thinking ability, thereafter achieving all-around development of students comprehensive quality. In middle school history teaching, historical map can make students feel historical knowledge visually, attract the students ’ interest in learning, and facilitate the interpretation of the key knowledge related to the teaching material, to facilitate student memorization. Accordingly, it is necessary for us to study the application of the historical maps theoretically and practically in the middle school. This can promote the usage of historical map in history teaching in the middle school history. In this paper, the research achievements of many experts, scholars, combined with their own work experience have been used for reference, the application of historical map in the middle school history teaching are expounded in four parts.The introduction part explains the cause of topic selection, research meaning, and research status and research methods. Through the analysis of the present status of research on historical maps, to understand the current research results.The first chapter describes the meaning of map, development situation, which leads to and interprets the definition of historical maps, and its classification was analyzed. Also it is discussed that the specificity, accuracy, instrumentality and comprehensive characteristics.The second chapter discusses the historical maps in history teaching applications. This article from historical maps help students to establish the concept of space, help to stimulate students interest in learning, help students in historical thinking ability, it is conducive to the elaboration of students in four areas about emotions, attitudes, values, culture and so on.The third chapter discusses the application principles of historical maps in middle school history teaching. It focuses on the scientific principle of historical maps, intuitive principle,systematic principle, the principle of the right amount of principle and focused. These principles play an important role in guiding of the history teaching.The fourth chapter discusses the applications methods of the historical map in middleschool. This article illustrates the topics from five aspects: Firstly, to teach knowledge chart method, requests the student to memorization map knowledge, secondly, it is to remind students to pay attention to the ancient place names, and analyzes the reasons of similarities and differences. Thirdly, to promote a variety of interdisciplinary study, improve students comprehensive ability. Fourthly, to pay attention to the induction and comparison of maps, to improve students comprehension. Fifthly, to use the multimedia auxiliary teaching, improve teaching quality.
