Historical maps have become an important part in each version of high school history textbooks.The text description and display of historical maps occupy a large amount of space in high school textbooks, which is of great importance. In addition, Comprehensive liberal arts occupies an vital position in the college entrance examination. Questions about the historical maps are a key testing subject in such two disciplines as history and geography. However, most of students can not offer a good answer to these questions, so the average score of history is very low. Historical maps are not only important for the teaching of history, but also the key points and difficulties in preparation for the college entrance examination. Given these reasons, there is a requirement for high school history teachers in the teaching of history to properly select historical maps, exactly interpret their information and rationally use the historical maps to produce excellent instructional designs. Therefore, the successful application of historical maps is the most effective way of improving the quality of teaching.This paper makes a thorough and systematic collation on the domestic and international education research related to the application of historical maps in teaching. Besides, under the guidance of the new curriculum theory, combined with PEP high school history textbooks, questions on historical maps in college entrance examination papers in the past five years and the author’s internship, this paper explores how to apply historical maps into high school class and cultivate various learning skills of students by considering the relevant theoretical achievements on history and the multi-way application of historical maps.This paper discusses the application of historical maps in high school history teaching from four aspects. First, explain the reason of choosing historical maps as the topic, especially its research background, current situation, significance and research methods. Second, discuss the definition of historical maps, including the distinction between geographic maps and historical maps, and put forward the classification of historical maps. Third, examine the current situation of using historical maps for teachers in class by using questionnaires as well as analyze the problems and causes. Fourth, put forward practical and effective solutions combined with the practical and theoretical research on history. And take Political system of the xia, shang and western zhou dynasty and The ancient commercial development as an example for case analysis. Last but not least, point out how history teachers make students obtain valid information through the map surface in order to improve students’ learning skills and their own teaching quality in preparation for the college entrance examination.
