Taking "Lao Wang" one of the representative works of Chinese Modern essay, as an example, this study tries to figure out the teaching value of the text of a poem to enlighten the later teaching practice. For the first step, about 65 academic work on "Lao Wang" since its publication has been collected and carefully studied to have an overview of diverse scholarly interpretations on this work. After that, some advice on the teaching value of "Lao Wang" would be offered, basing on a comprehensive analysis of textbook and ten teaching cases. This study is divided into 4 parts. The first part tries to grasp academic interpretation of the case as a whole, which paves way for the fourth part of this study. The second part is to analyze the reading-supporting systems and after-class exercises, basing on three different sets of teaching materials, including Shanghai edition, PEP edition and Jiangsu edition. It is hoped that after this composite analysis the teaching value of this work could be explicit. Part three focuses on interpretation of ten teaching cases on "Lao Wang", and then summarizes different teaching objectives and contents of this work in middle school and high school Chinese teaching. The last chapter aims to sort out diverse teaching values of "Lao Wang" mentioned above, and then makes suggestions on different teaching values in middle school teaching and high school teaching, hoping to be of some use in future Chinese teaching activities.
