The new Mathematics Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011) puts forward the four basic instead the double basic education of basic knowledge and basic skills the for the first time, therefore, it can be seen that the thinking methods are so much important. The thinking methods include abstract thinking, reasoned thinking and mathematical thinking. And abstract thinking contains symbolic thinking. The symbol sense is mentioned in the ten core concepts, and based on that, the paper stressed on the using situation of the symbolic thinking.First of all, the paper analyses some knowledge points about symbolic thinking of the primary mathematics textbooks, which are the version of BeiJing normal university. Then combine the curriculum standards, textbooks and reference books to write quizzes about symbolic thinking to test the first, second and third grade students. Also test the fourth and the fifth grade students from different schools to analyze the current situation of the symbolic thinking. Meanwhile, drawing some conclusions and put forward some strategies through the teachers’ interview and survey results.Here are some of the conclusions from the survey of the paper1. The arrangements of the symbolic thinking in the textbooks are reasonable and meet the need of the characteristics of the students’ age.2. The current situation of the symbolic thinking is that the level of the symbolic thinking is low, the three different schools have significant difference, different gender has no difference and the teachers have lack of the conscious of symbolic thinking.3. The strategies to train the students of symbolic thinking. Firstly, from the teachers’ view, on the one hand, they have to know the curriculum standard well; they have to change their mind, enhance their self-cultivation. As for the practical level, it has to connect the real life to lead the students to discover the different meanings of symbolic thinking. Making the students express how to use the symbolic thinking properly and transfer the way of thinking flexibly, also enhancing the way to solve some problems by using symbolic thinking.
