Expository essays in classic style are the commentary and persuasive articles written by the people in the past to express their viewpoints or mind.Expository essays in classic style, with great expository wisdom and argumentative art, contain the reflections of the forefathers on history, society, philosophy, life and the principles of life. They are treasure of great value in the Chinese literature.Expository essays in classic style in secondary schools are an integral part of classical Chinese and argumentation teaching. With expository essays in classic style, students can not only learn, in a subtle way, the ancient thoughts and culture of the people in the past, look into the confound spiritual connotation, improve their cultural and literary accomplishment; the essays can also improve students’ level of logical thinking and build a solid foundation for reading and writing argumentation. Therefore, expository essays in classic style in secondary schools should be paid close attention. The significance of expository essays in classic style being recognized, it is worth studying how to teach them well. The teaching is so special and difficult that the approach to teaching classical Chinese orthe approach to teachingargumentation cannot be applied without any adjustment. In addition, none of the language points in the essays can be neglected. As a result, the two approaches above-mentioned should be integrated, forming an appropriate approach to teaching such essays.The thesis contains four chapters, each studying expository essays in classic style in a particular aspect.Introduction depicts the basis of choosing the topic and elaborates the researches done by the elites of now and past.Chapter Two explores the pedagogical value of the expository essays in classic style in secondary schools. It discusses contemporary value of such thought and how to develop students’ way of thinking with the essays, so that the value of the essays can reach its maximum in daily teaching.In Chapter Three, some excellent teaching examples are singled out to explore how the teachers incarnate the connotations and ways of expression in the expository essays in classic style. From the examples it can be concluded that some approaches of teaching are worth studying and promoting, while others are questionable and have room for improvement.Chapter Four presentssome feasible suggestions on how to compile a textbook, such as the excerpt choice and ratio, the exercises attached, which are followed by practical methods to implement.
