Discourse Of Teaching In Primary Schools

A sentence group is a linguistic unit between a sentence and a text. The teaching of sentence groups aims at developing pupils' expressive competence with a group of sentences. Sentence grouping, which is an extension of combining words into a sentence, is the transition from a sentence to a text, hence the basis of text writing. As it functions as a bridge and it is the only way to a good composition. It is of great significance to teach sentence groups to pupils who have just started composition writing for cultivation of pupils' good ability to write composition.The present thesis, based on abundant language materials from pupils' work, is a study of the various problems that may arise out of teaching sentence groups in primary schools. After a full and careful examination of sentence groups and texts written by pupils, the writer of this thesis has found some problems which occur when pupils express with sentence groups. The causes for them have been found with a view to finding some countermeasures. Several problems concerning the teaching of sentence groups in primary schools are studied in this paper mainly from the linguistic point of view. The research, influenced by the study of sentence groups in itself and that of the teaching methods, is based on children's cognitive and thinking abilities. The recent developments in this respect are adopted as the theoretical guidance and the principles of cognitive linguistics are also applied in the paper. The writer holds that the key to sentence group teaching is to correctly understand its nature, to tell pupils the functions of basic elements of a sentence group, and to provide them with the techniques of sentence grouping. Some proposals are also put forward to improve the teaching of sentence groups in primary schools.
