The study explores and analyzes the problems existing in English teaching in Chinese middle schools. The author puts forward a way that is suitable for English classes-Cooperative Learning. We try to find (a) there is a distinct difference in terms of English learning motivation between Cooperative Learning and traditional teaching; (b) there is a distinct difference in terms of English learning strategies between Cooperative Learning and traditional teaching; (c) there is a distinct difference in terms of classroom atmosphere between Cooperative Learning and traditional teaching. The study consists of four parts. The first part defines what the Cooperative Learning means, raises questions and gives the importance and methodology for research. The second part discusses the theoretical foundations and main characteristic of Cooperative Learning. The third part includes experimental study and a questionnaire. A related experimental study and a questionnaire are carried out to prove the author's viewpoint. Two classes are selected, as the subjects of the study, with one class as the experimental group and the other as the control group. From the results we can draw the following conclusion: cooperative learning can improve the students' English learning motivation, the students' English learning strategies and the classroom atmosphere. It also can stimulate the students' enthusiasm of English learning. The fourth part makes a summarization and offers some suggestions for the questions that arise in Cooperative Learning.
