The concept of life-long education in order to enhance the quality of the whole nation has been widely recognized, and the capability of self-study is the key ability in the success of life-long education.The thesis mainly elucidates how to foster students' capability of self-study in teaching.The author of this article, with the principle of combination of curriculum and extra-curriculum and the combination of teacher's instruction and students' self-study, points out that the key element in cultivating students' ability of self-study is to rouse and activate the interest of the students' self-study and to lead correctly in the process of the self-study.With the aim of realizing this end, and in regard to the cultivation of every specific ability of self-study (such as reading ability, the ability of solving practical problems, active probing ability and the ability of investigation and research.) the author points out the curriculum instruction achieves the end of cultivating students' ability of self-study in the following four methods. 1. self-questioning 2. self-study 3. self-exercise 4. self-application. Extra-curriculum activities achieves this end by the purposeful manual-operational activities. The links of these activities are guesswork-testing-proving-conclusion-application.
