All sections of the society especially higher educational institutions in China have paid great attention to college and university teachers' teaching effectiveness because the quality of teaching in undergraduate education has appeared a little decline and the quality-oriented education has carried out in recent years. Aiming at some serious problems in teaching, the dissertation based on the former study mainly discusses such questions as why and how college and university teachers teach effectively and how they become effective teachers so as to improve teachers' teaching abilities and effectiveness and accordingly to promote the quality of college and university teaching.Effective teaching in higher educational institutions is defined as teaching can successfully promote the learning and progress of undergraduates and achieve the teaching objective expected and meet the teaching demand at the least cost. The ultimate criterion that measures effective teaching is substantial progress or development that students acquired in teaching. Effective teaching in higher educational institutions is a new modern teaching idea. Effective teaching is developmental and so every teacher can become an effective teacher if only he makes great effort. Effective teaching is a multidimensional construct and so effective college and university teachers may not always perform perfectly in all the dimensions of effective teaching. There are some most important and fundamental characteristics about effective teaching in higher educational institutions that include sufficient preparation, good organization, lesson clarity, motivating students, enthusiasm for teaching and harmonious relation between teachers and students. If college and university teachers want to improve teaching effectiveness and to become effective teachers, they should continuously struggle to capture these characteristics. After analyzing the situations about the teaching effectiveness of college and university teachers at present, the thesis points out.five strategies to improve the effectiveness of teaching in classroom that are teaching clearly, conducting teaching conversation,motivating students to learn, paying attention to teaching students methods and optimizing managing teaching hours in classroom. Important ways and means that college and university teachers become effective teachers are teaching training, learning and reflection on teaching. A new idea about teaching training should be established and the teaching training should focuses on improving college and university teachers' enthusiasm for teaching, the level of knowledge, the sense of teaching efficacy and the ability of supervising their own teaching. At the same time, college and university teachers should learn by themselves to improve their own teaching expertise. Besides, college and university teachers should reflect on their own teaching by such ways as the log of experience, teaching observation, communication and discussion and action research so as to improve the reasonableness of teaching practice and promote the effectiveness of teaching.
