Classroom teaching is the main channel of higher education, which reflects and decides the quality of higher education. As the main object of classroom teaching, the huge student group of universities has the power and the ability to evaluate the teachers' teaching quality. In the late 1980s, our universities began to implement the Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) step by step, which had some positive effects on improving the quality of classroom teaching in universities. However, many shortages and contradictions exposed gradually in the process of implementing the SET. The standardization of evaluation procedure and the degree of validity and reliability are the main problems. It is recognized that how to deal with these problems well is very important to carry out the SET well in the future.By introducing and analyzing the condition of the SET in America, this paper try to seek for something that can be used for reference in order to improving the quality of SET in China universities.Firstly, this paper systematically introduces how the SET is prepared, implemented, feed back and utilized in both China and America, and compares the differences and sameness. Then, the paper analyzes the economic and political reason of the differences existing between the two countries. At last, the paper brings forward several conclusions that come from the work of SET in America. The conclusions are that we should provide thinking, technology and policy assurances if we want to improve the SET in china universities. Also, the paper analyzes the measures of realizing these assurances.
