Although Zeng Guofan was not a profession educationist, yet he perseveres in reading throughout the life. He has the learning experience of himself. He attached importance to education very much , and guided brothers and sons to study through motivation , custom , method and so on . And then come into being the reading education thinking system of him.In the aim of reading ,Zeng Guofan emphasized the meaning of reading to the realization of the individual existence value, namely achieve the success of career and safeguard the respect of yourself, Yet Zeng Guofan did not recognize the worldly viewpoint of the studying for official career and money at all .Zeng Guofan thought reading might enhance the morality culture of him, an intellectual might make own spirit sublimated through empathizing poetics. The highest level of Zeng Guofan's reading teleology was studying for dedicating to the country and the people.Zeng Guofan emphasized the importance of reading quality, Particularly emphasized that study would possess aspiration and perseverance . He thought that aspiration had a vital effect on studying. The people who had lofty aim could conquer the wicked environment of reading. He still emphasized that it should be persevering in reading for many times; the junior reading habit was cultivated through rigorous demand. He thought that perseverance to study need interest to maintain, moreover cultivated the interest of junior's reading by some means.On the reading methods, Zeng Guofan had much concrete guidance on how to select and read book. He proposed that the reading should be extensive , not stick to sectarianism , and admit widely to else schools, take in everything .On the content of the reading education, he attached much importance to the value of the extensively reading, and broke through the limitations that only allow juniors to read stereotyped writing. He required juniors to read the historical books , the literature books and so on. Moreover he caught sight of the limitation of the traditional education, and proposed to read much about the natural science books. In order to read widely, he proposed that the reading speed should be lifted. Zeng Guofan still thought that the book we would read should be chosen. He chose the reading catalogue from the angle of compose, from the angle of conformance and altering temperament, from the angle of step-by-step, guide juniors to study. And he required juniors to read the books about home education.Zeng Guofan thought that not only the book should be read with eyes, but also with reading aloud, and moreover, attached importance to the means of the read aloud.
