Zeng Guofan is a famous character which in the Chinese modern historyand also has the dispute, but everybody is unable to deny his success to educate the juniors. Zeng Guofan is the Qing Dynasty renowned educationalist, and his education thought mainly concentrates in his letters and parental instructions. This paper which mainly rests on his letters and parental instructions elaborates the reading education thought of Zeng. The language education thought of Zeng inherited and has carried forward the outstanding experiences of our country traditional language education, and then has formed his own unique reading education thought. This paper mainly elaborated the reading education thought of Zeng from four aspects: First, Zeng thought the function of reading education lies in the variation of temperament, the goal is to train gentleman who knows what's what. That decides the contents of reading education, namely the Confucianist classics, the literature classics and the history books as well as economic leanings. Second, Zeng regarded that the reading education must pay equal attention to essential meaning principle and the textual criticism, develop in breadth and depth, and educate the high grade reading quality in order to make ambitions, views and constancy become the scholar's three kinds of indispensable qualities. Third, the reading method theory of Zeng inherits from Zhu Xi, but he further developed it. He thought that the reading methods mainly have the following five kinds: Reading must follow the rule which proceeds in an orderly way, unify looking, reading, writing and compositting into one, be modesty and swimming, relate the reading to one's own experience, besides, do reciting and thinking . Fourth, the reading education thought of Zeng throw an enlightenment on current language reading teaching: The reading teaching must take the student as a independent body, center on reading, pay regard to accumulating, feeling and gradual influences. In our country, the reform of current language education and particularly reading education is comprehensively launching, so it is necessary to study and to profit from the reading education thought of Zeng Guofan.
