Based on the study of mathematics plays in civil and abroad, the present thesisdelimits the definition of mathematics plays, discusses their category, analyses theirfunction and indicates the interests and extensive participation are the maincharacteristics of mathematics plays. Therefore the plays can arouse the interests andenthusiasm of students to learn mathematics, put the abstract mathematics knowledgeand principle into practical use so that new experiences will be generated throughcommunication and cooperation of students. At the same time, mathematics playsfocus on fostering the ability to think independently and to cooperate andcommunicate with each other in order to improve the comprehension and applicationof the theoretical knowledge, accelerate the exertion of students'imagination andcreativity. This thesis adopts the method of empirical research based on the theoreticalfoundations.Concerning with the certain problems of classroom mathematics teaching inelementary education nowadays, and combining with the reform of elementaryeducational curriculum and requirements of the second curriculum reform in Shanghai, the author comes up with the present research and practice of plays teaching based onDewey's educational theory of learning-by-doing, Piaget's theory of cognitivedevelopment and the idea of team work. Selecting several samples in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and gambling etc., by careful designing, some samples have beenput into practice under available conditions. Through analysis, the author believes thatit has great help to alter students'learning style and their ideas on study byintroducing mathematics plays into classroom. Students can obtain different feelingsand experiences by operating, observing, supposing, verifying, proving, popularizingand applying; their abilities of manipulating, apperception, exploring, discovering andcreativity are improved accordingly. The author also finds that mathematics plays canwell arouse students'learning interests, strengthen students'learning motivation, givestudents favorable feeling and experience in communication, bring up good learningattitude, and effectively improve the current situation of "the talk between a teacherand a student"and "the talk between two students".In the end, the thesis discusses the restriction of the present research on introducingmathematics plays into the classroom teaching.
