With the rapid progress in the modern information technology, both the applied mathematics and mathematical applications have been evolving and transforming to their next level. The results of these developments have a great impact on the advances of the mathematical education. In compliant with requirements of new mathematical curricular reform such as enhancing education in applicability, creativity and connections with students'life and social practice, mathematical modelling has been playing a very important role. It is also becoming a very much researched subject regarding its implementation and realization in a classroom environment. Today there is still very few mathematical modelling curricular developed for high school or junior high school classes. It is often not clear or sometimes confusing for instructors to teach the subject effectively. This thesis studies learning and teaching of mathematical modelling in a junior high school class. We first identify several factors that affect students'abilities in performing mathematical modelling. Only students in this country are studied. We develop several strategies of teaching mathematical modelling effectively in the classroom environment via documentary research and qualitative research. From the statistical analysis of the data we collected from classroom observations, interviews, homework and surveys, we have found the following important factors in effective doing mathematical modelling activity for students: the student's ability of mathematical reading, simplying practical problems, understanding and use of mathematics language and metacognition, and other factors such as student's ability of communicating with peers and teacher. In the thesis, we propose several strategies to improve the student's ability of mathematical reading, simplying practical problems, understanding and use of mathematics language and metacognition respectively so as to improve students'mathematization ability and their modelling ability in daily math class; In order to increase efficiency of mathematical modelling teaching, we recommend a teacher should be more like a...
