At present, at colleges and universities of our country, the currentmoral condition of students allows of no sanguine, while moral educationat colleges and universities falls relatively behind and cannot meet thedemands of the new developing circumstances. The problem originates inthe fact that our moral education has not shaken off the yoke of traditionalmoral education theories and has overstressed teachers' subjective andcentral position in it. Since the subjectivity of students has been neglected,students are only considered as passive receivers of social moralityregulations and educated mainly by means of instilling. So the studentsoften lack of independence, initiative and creativity or have lowself-consciousness and self-control ability. Some even consequently actdishonestly and illegally. These problems are challenging moral educationat colleges and universities.Starting from a new viewpoint and the students being educated, thispaper proposes subjective moral education and states its connotations andessential characteristics. Subjective moral education means that theteacher subject guides and motivates the initiative, independence andcreativity of student subject aimfully and planfully according to therequirements of society and laws of development of students' bodies andminds, promoting self-improvement and self-development of students'ideological and moral qualities in forms of equal contacts,communication and conversations between teachers and students so as todevelop students' senses of being social subjects and to train them to haveknowledge, morality, disciplines and ideals. Meanwhile, subjective moraleducation is continuous and does not bind, force and instill students toobey existed moral regulations. It takes moral demands as starting pointsand driving power, advancing people's subjectivity to achieve fullimprovement of individual morality and full development of individualcharacter through students' own explorations, efforts and moral practiceas well as developing their subject qualities. It requires that the heart ofmoral education at schools should be transferred from teaching moralprinciples and regulations to developing moral thoughts and cultivatingmoral abilities. Its ultimate aim is to fulfill students' morality and makestudents, who are subjects of moral practices, have the abilities to conductmoral and rational thinking, judgments and choices and to adjust theirmoral acts. So, finally, students' moral characters can be promoted andtheir personalities sublimated.It is necessary to practice subjective moral education at colleges anduniversities. It is practical need of both social and individual development.It is also a necessary choice for moral education at colleges anduniversities to step out of difficult position. To practice subjective moraleducation well: 1) to acquire correct concepts of moral education so as tohelp the establishment of students' subject position in moral educationprocess;2) to reform the substance of traditional moral education so as tohelp the acceptance by the educated;3) to adopt flexible methods ofmoral education so as to help the production of students' subjectivity;4)to create comfortable environment for moral education so as to help thecultivation of students' subjectivity;5) to construct scientific evaluationsystem of moral education so as to help the realization of the objectives ofsubjective moral education.Moral education at colleges and universities is a systematic project.There must be viewpoints of systematic management to keep the wholeeducating system working harmoniously and to help all elementscooperate harmoniously. In order to conduct subjective moral educationsmoothly, colleges and universities should strengthen regulation andmanagement of the whole moral education and give full play to theinitiative of every aspect and function of current education resources.How colleges and universities take vigorous action to carry forwardsubjective moral education is an important problem demanding promptsolution. This paper holds the points that colleges and universities oughtto get a clear understanding of the present situation and problems ofmoral education, probe positively into effective ways and methods ofsubjective moral education, enhance its actuality, direction, scientificnessand effectiveness, try all the best to create a new situation of moraleducation at colleges and universities.
