Education for development is the orientation of educational development in China in the new century which needs the instruction of advanced educational thoughts. At the same time quality education must combine with the specific teaching to make it carry out and develop. The paper embarks the teaching of geography and researches how to improve students' basic qualities in the middle school depending on the map teaching. In the process of research, the paper mainly uses qualitative analysis in addition to some concrete map teaching cases and some questionnaires on map teaching etc. Through analyzing some theories on map teaching experiences, the paper acquires the following results:The traditional map teaching will have many experiences worth's us to profit from it in the later teaching, for instance, value students' ability of reading map, but neglected the map in promoting the students' other ability aspects to raise and formation of their emotion the manner and value view the function. This also is the request of the quality education and the new curriculum reforms to the map teaching.In the background of new curriculum reform and under new technological revolution, we must unceasingly improve map teaching way and method, realize the map teaching way diversification, the map teaching resources multiplication. For example, the appearance of multimedia network technology enables us to obtain too much and even better map teaching resources.How to adapt map teaching under the new situation is one important challenge which every geography teacher are facing. Geography teachers must value not only in their thoughts, but must unceasingly strengthen their map teaching ability, adapt the request of the time to map teaching.
