The Construction Of School Culture: The New Trends Of The Modern School,

The Symposium on Foundamental Education and Modern School Systems was held by the Edudation Department of the Ministry of Education in Pudong, Shanghai in July, 2003. The central issue of the symposium was discussing the administration and improvement of modern schools. From then on, constructing modern school systems has become a new reform move after the reformation of foundational education courses, and school culture as a new kind of organizational culture following the example of enterprise culture has drawn close attention of education scholars and schoolmasters. More and more reseaches on the defination, construction, strategies and significance of school culture are being developed. But as to what the school culture is and how to construct the school culture, many people don't have clear understanding. Some people even equate school culture to campus culture, thus leading to erroneous tendancy in the school culture's construction. The construction of school culture covers all the respects of school work, including both the dominant and recessive work.In summary, the construction of school culture consists of four aspects: the construction of spiritual culture, the construction of systematic culture, the construction of group culture and the construction of material culture, with the spiritual culture construction as the core, the systematic culture construction as the guarantee, and the group and material culture construction as dominant and apparent contents. The four aspects complement each other while emphasize particularly on different fields, thus forming an organic integrity, which reflects the school's kernel values on education goal and development objective. To handle the four aspects properly, we should give prominence to the cultivation of people's care for values, moral purcuit, personal spirit and capacity of will.
