Popular songs, being an important component part of cultural diversity, have been adopted into secondary school music textbooks ever since the new round of basic education reform launched . There has been a turn from a closed attitude to an open one in educational field. This paper makes a theoretical and practical exploration of teaching pop songs in secondary schools. At present, China's secondary school students have a widespread preference of pop songs over other music categories. The author of this paper makes a serious attempt to do some research to guide students on judgment and selection of popular songs, to improve the aesthetic appreciation, and to reduce negative effects of pop songs upon secondary school students. The author's writing is based upon in-depth thoughts, analyses of the real situation and a close study of related literature. The full text is divided into four chapters. The first chapter discusses the concept of pop song and its historic changes. A complicated concept would often lead to ambiguity, therefore a clear definition of pop songs and a look at the concept evolution are the premise conditions of the discussion. The second chapter outlines the multi-cultural vision of music education in secondary schools, providing a theoretical basis for further discussions. The third chapter is a practical study of pop music teaching in secondary schools, providing strategic references and support for teaching practices. This chapter proposes also the importance of sound judgment and careful selection of pop music on the basis of psychological principles and a comprehensive study of related factors. The fourth chapter sums up the practical significance of pop music teaching in secondary schools. The concluding section stresses once again the importance of introducing good songs into the classroom, and emphasizes their functional significance in promoting students' interest in and enhancing their aesthetic appreciation of music. Such is also to achieve the cultural diversity of music education and to truly attend to the ultimate goal of China's existing music curriculum standards.
