Under the background of globalizing and integrating world economy, the curriculum reform of basic education in China is impacted by the value of cultural diversity. Challenged by the value of cultural diversity, a heavy responsibility is undertaken by the music textbooks, which not only bears the mission of inheriting outstanding folk music in China, but needs to respond to changes in social diversity. The curriculum standard in 2011 proposed specific objectives for music courses, namely "learn the music culture of China and other nations in the world and understand the cultural diversity of music in an open-minded view". Besides, it was pointed in the curriculum standard that the respect and learning of different national cultures are conducive to world peace and development. Therefore, the respect and understanding for different national music cultures should be reflected in the contents of the music textbooks, and compilers of textbooks concerning music of various ethics in China and other nations throughout the world should take an inclusive attitude and follow the specific requirements set forth in the curriculum standards:to "correctly handle the relationship between the traditional and modern cultures as well as between China’s music culture and multiple cultures in the world, pay attention to absorb outstanding modern works with a sense of contemporaneity, link to the social life closely, enrich the teaching materials and broaden musical horizons of students". As the most important carrier of cultural transmission, music textbooks reflect the requirements for personnel training under the value of cultural diversity.The music textbook for junior high schools published by the current Hunan Literature & Art Press (hereinafter referred to as "Xiangyi-edition") is selected in the paper as the case study, attempting to conduct in-depth analysis and research for folk music in Xiang yi-edition music textbook of junior high schools. The paper is mainly divided into four sections:The first section is introduction, which starts from the concept and its definition of cultural diversity and elaborates the value and necessity of theoretical researches on cultural diversity in textbooks. Besides, the research ideas and methods here in are also introduced.In the second section, the concept of national folk music and the development of cultural diversity theory are introduced, and the relationship among the cultural diversity theory, music education and music teaching materials is clarified.The cultural diversity of folk music in Xiang yi-edition music textbook for junior high schools is analyzed in the third section, so as to discuss folk music of China and other nations throughout the world from the perspective of cultural diversity. Specific elaborations are conducted from the nation, genre, geography, singing ways, musical instruments, illustrations and other angles, thus reaching a preliminary overall understanding for cultural diversity of national folk music in current Xiang yi-edition textbooks.The characteristics presented from the cultural diversity of national folk music in current textbooks are analyzed and the existing problems in the compilation of the textbook are discussed in the fourth section. Finally, from the perspectives of textbook compilers and users, the countermeasures and suggestions are proposed for the preparation of cultural diversity of folk music in music textbook for junior high schools.
