Now with attaching importance to the culture of Chinese nation, it is a shaft of light to guide students read Great Books in the reform of elementary education. Now the situation is in the ascendant. Junior Great Books Program is a very important reading program in America. Now it has more than 40 years history. It has ripe experience in development and scheme. We can use the experience of the program for reference.The article emphasizes on the background and the theory. What's more, it will introduce the program in detail. The Junior Great Books Program is the cornerstone to make reading and discussing literature a lifelong pursuit. By combining age-appropriate literature with the shared inquiry method of discussion, Junior Great Books brings literature to life and helps students discover a joy of reading they will carry with them into adulthood. With Great Books, students can comprehend important texts and achieve higher literacy across the curriculum. Great Books gives students the challenge they deserve—no lecturing, no summarizing, no memorizing. Instead, students read important texts for themselves and build their own understanding through the Shared Inquiry method of learning. Furthermore, the article explores assess of the program. At last it take the public schools in Chicago for example.What about our present situation of reading great books by youth? I not only analyzed relative documents, but also investigated four middle school and high school by a questionnaire. It showed that the situation is not optimistic. The leaders and Chinese teachers of schools have taken measure to guide students read great books, but it is vulnerable. There are many problems. Firstly we hardly realized the importance of reading great boos for youth themselves. Secondly, the complied great books series can't meet the students' demand. Thirdly, schools seldom offer the course of great books. At last, the reading is lack a support system.I emphasized on the problems in guiding students read great books. At last, I find a plenty of advantages from Junior Great Books Program to guide our youth to read great books. First of all, we must realize the importance of reading great books. Secondly, we can compile the books to satisfy the student. Thirdly, we can offer the course of great books.
