Reading is a complicated process of recognition, understanding and application for readers, a significant method of doing research, and also an important way of collecting and processing information, apprehending the world, developing thinking and acquiring aesthetic experience. High school students, who are at the best age of reading, should be a real reader. As a great accomplishment of people’s wisdom and emotion, the Four Great Classical Novels of China are an accretion of Chinese best culture and language, which contain luxuriant spirit and culture connotation. Nothing can compare with this great work on cultivating high school students’ spirit, personality and culture sensation. They are staying remarkable as the years going on, and refining people’s spirit by its profound ideology and luxuriant contents. Through reading the Four Great Classical Novels, high school students can rich there knowledge, inner world and humanity accomplishment, and also it is the essential way to teach reading. But the students in Ba Dong County haven’t done a good job in reading this great work, and teachers there didn’t carry out the teaching plan very well either.This thesis is on the basis of the author doing research about human culture and education in Ba Dong, consulting some resource and doing questionnaire among three high schools in Ba Dong County. Through the research result, the author has had a better understanding of students’reading situation of the Four Great Classical Novels, analyzed some factors that affect students reading this great work, and then explored some strategies of improving students’reading.Through collecting and analyzing the research data, the author found the following problems in students’reading. Firstly, students lack interests and motivation in reading the Four Great Classical Novels. Secondly, students’ reading is limited by a lot of factors,: the rural region factor, instant culture phenomenon, backward facilities in Ba Dong high schools like library and reading room, uneducated family environment. Through some researches and interviews, teachers’ teaching is arbitrary, utilitarian and lacks of systematization. Thirdly, Students don’t manage the right way of reading. Last, students don’t have enough time to read.According to the factors that affect Ba Dong students’ reading, this thesis has presented several effective methods. Teachers are one of the most important factors. First, teachers should have a larger storage of knowledge, improve their professional abilities, and meet the curriculum standard. Teachers need to give students proper leading, instructions and supervising, which can be carried out through these ways, giving an overall consideration of different reading resources, arranging time wisely, instructing students on reading effectively, carrying out various activities, establishing a reasonable evaluation system, etc. Besides, parents should cooperate actively, giving their kids enough emotional and financial support. School leaders should pay more attention, better school facilities and curriculum setting. What’s more, students have to build up reading motivation, get a correct understanding of classical works, try to find interests in reading, manage right way of reading, form proper reading habits and develop reading emotion.
