The University of Science and Technology of China(UCTC) was founded by Chinese Academy of Science(CAS) in 1958. Since its very beginning, CAS has adopted a policy of "running the university with resources of the entire CAS and integrating each of its departments with relevant CAS research institutes." The university set up a series of programs that creatively encompassed the frontiers of science and new technologies to meet the needs of the nation for developing science and technology. The CAS supported the university creatively by integrating science with technology, cutting-edge sciences with the latest technologies in cultivating high-tech talent in new, frontier and interdisciplinary fields. In 1958, the principle of education was pointed out by the CPC Central Committee—"Education must services for the Proletarian political, Education must be combined with production and labor, Education must be led by Communist Party".To implement the policy, USTC set up the three-pronged approach of party committees, teachers and students . On the basis of the transformation of ideas for teachers, the university started education reform. To put the education principle of"education must be combined with production and labor"into practice, the university started work-study program and builded factories, organised teachers and students to participate in a series of productive labor, such as mass movement of steelmaking, autumn harvest labour, and activities of research and production and so on. In a series of education reform, the most important thing was the adjustment of department and specialities.Since 1958,the University emphasized the teaching of fundamental courses and provided its students with a wide range of high-level training that incorporated newly-emerging as well as interdisciplinary fields of study. USTC has adhered to its motto of "being both politically sound and professionally competent, and integrating theory with practice" and promoted a style of "living for innovations." Research on this period of history is important for the future education.
