The opportunities should be also grasped and the challenges should be met in the sport education,which is an important part of educational reform and development. The Eleventh National Games hosted by Shandong Province is bound not only to promote the innovation of physical education in the history of our country, but also to speed up educational reform and development of physical education.This article systematically researches the undergraduate track and field curriculum of physical education in Shandong Province. In accordance with the objective of compound physical education talents training and for the purpose of the study of undergraduate track and field courses in physical education at colleges and universities, the investigation and research are made in the curriculum model, teaching objectives, teaching content, teaching methods and evaluation of the reform of the status quo in the track and field courses in Shandong Province, using literature data, questionnaire survey, expert interviews and statistical analysis. The emphasis is focused on the research and in-depth exploration into the key and difficult questions concerning the reform and development of the track and field curriculum, which involve the attitudes toward the curriculum reform and the practices, the relations between the objectives of physical education talents training, track and field curriculum models and goals of curriculums, curriculum teaching content integration, setup of evaluation systems and use of modern teaching methods.The investigation results are as follows:(1) The construction of track and field courses of regular higher learning in Shandong Province can basically carry out Outline in the Guidance to Types of Track and Field Courses, newly issued by Ministry of Education, and respond to the course reforms timely.(2) The ages, education qualifications and structures of professional positions among the track and field teachers remain to be further improved. The track and field teaching facilities in Shandong Province can basically meet the teaching requirements, and the courses setup accords with the requirements of Guiding Outline of Physical Education for Regular Chinese Universities and Colleges.(3) The track and field courses are the students'favorites, and they have the opinion that they have improved their practical abilities. However, the students'innovative abilities should also be strengthened.(4) The contents in the track and field courses in the regular universities and colleges of Shandong Province emphasize too much the teachings of basic skills and abilities, thus ignoring the cultivation in students'psychology and social adaptability. The teaching methods are quite relatively old fashioned. The modern teaching methods, such as the multimedia, are not fully employed, and the students'enthusiasm cannot be fully motivated.(5)The enthusiasm about scientific research is not high among the teachers with the senior professional positions, and there are few scientific findings, which proves that the evaluation and systems of rewards and penalties need further improving. Most of the teachers have no chance to receive training and further education, which influences the improvement of the teaching levels.(6)Most respondents are unsatisfied with the teaching result of the courses. The factors influencing teaching quality are mainly the teaching levels and imperfect syllabus and textbooks. Thus the importance should be attached to teachers'training and the construction of teaching material.Great importance has been attached to the education in the track and field in Shandong Province in the past years and great achievements have been made in the development of the courses in track and field. The teaching of the courses in the track and field fields has been greatly improved. The structures of the ages, educational level and titles of the teaching staff have become more and more rationalized and the teaching facilities of the track and field have also been significantly improved. However, there still remain some problems in the teaching of current undergraduate courses of the physical education in Shandong Province: lack of flexibility in teaching methods, necessity of the improvement in the selection of teaching contents and transformation of the concepts and attitudes about the reform of teaching and learning in both teachers and students.On the basis of the existing problems in the investigation, this paper puts forward the following eight reform proposals concerning the teaching of track and field courses in Shandong Province: 1. Establishing a correct guiding ideology of teaching and enhancing the overall quality of students majoring in track and field; 2. Emphasizing the leading role of students and creating harmonious relations between teachers and students; 3. Transforming teaching concepts and establishing the training patterns of compound physical education talents; 4. Speeding up the reform of teaching methods and means, optimizing the teaching methods; 5. Strengthening the training and development of professional track and field staff; 6. Establishing an evaluation system that is conducive to all-round development of students and teachers; 7. Improving the teaching facilities of track and field and intensifying track and field resources; 8. Intensifying the publicity about the advantages of track and field to promote the students'interest in track and field.
