The Chinese tariff and non-tariff measures have changed greatly after China became a member of World Trade Organization (WTO). Tariffs have been lowered and most non-tariff barriers have been eliminated according to the regulations of the WTO. The trade laws and regulations will be modified with the change of traditional trade policies. Following the development of international trade, the global multilateral trade regime has been improved. Non-tariff barriers are not supported by any trade regime and trade negotiations. The tax rate of impost products were lowered continuously .But, this does not mean that trade protection becomes history. In fact technical barriers to trade, such as Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, are currently applied to trade practices in most nations.Japan is an important trade partner of China. After World War II, the economy of Japan developed rapidly .The trade policies were adjusted timely and properly. It is important for us to gain experience from the successes of Japan. We can learn from the Japanese experiences to reform our trade policies. This is the basic consideration for conducting this thesis. This thesis compares and analyzes the development of agricultural trade in both China and Japan and proposes recommendations for improving the Chinese agricultural products trade. The thesis has four chapters. Chapter 1 explains the background and the meaning of this study. Chapter 2 introduces the different trade measures of China and Japan. Chapter 3 compares and analyzes the development of agricultural trade in China and Japan in terms of economic development and draws useful experiences from the Japanese case.
