Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) hold an important position in our national economy. Speeding up their development is of significance in the national economy development, accelerating the development of socialist market economy, alleviating the severe pressure on employment and maintaining the social stability. However, most of them lag behind in management and lack competitiveness. With the arrival of new economy, it is urgent for them to seize the opportunity, make knowledge an important resources, enhance productivity by management and strengthen their competitiveness.With the concept of knowledge chain management (KCM) coming into being, the horizon of knowledge management study is streamlined. KCM is a value-adding network chain both inside and between enterprises through which knowledge can be captured, selected, organized and innovated. It bridges the gap between knowledge management and business process.Based on the results of KCM study from home and abroad and taking the reality of SMEs into account, the author puts forward a KCM model for SMEs based on business process, by which KCM makes contributions in speeding up their growth. Having reviewed the theory on knowledge management and KCM and analyzed the lack in knowledge management, the author introduces what is KCM and puts forward A preliminary model for SMEs after having analyzed them and the necessity to implement KCM for them, furthermore the author constructs a general model for SMEs which consists of basic activities, supportive resources and driving factors based on the KCM model by C.W.Holsapple and M.Singh. The basic activities include acquisition, selection, creation, internalization and externalization of knowledge. Supportive resources are made up of organization structure, corporate culture, human resources and information technology. Finally, the author makes a diagnosis of the knowledge management situation in a Kunming decorative material company and puts forward measures enabling it to put KCM into practice.
