Nowadays, people almost all over the world are affected by the impact of material desires. Many buildings in China have been too blundering to express their inner spirit since designed. However, architectures'essence is psychic as well as physical. Being full of people's thoughts and emotions, architectures should reveal human spirit with their material substance, or it will be imposible for them to shelter human souls and help men dwell on this earth poetically.The contemporary church design especially needs to achieve the characteristic of space with architectural language, and express its religious spirit. This thesis turns to Christianity to see which spirit to express, and discuss how to express them in design by study the project of TianJin JiZhuang Church and other churches abroad as well.This thesis is mainly composed of five parts, each of which focuses on one aspect in churchs' design. In chapter 1, based on the opinion that churches are shelters of souls and arks of humans, the relationship between church and the environment is discussed. Chapter 2 studies 3 kinds of churches and their religious cause, from which churches'organization of functions and forms are deliberated. Chapter 3 focuses on pureness and tranquility mentioned in Christianity, discusses churches'styles by means of materials and expressive processing. Investigating the expression of the path to redemption, spatial sequence of church is deliberated in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 focuses on the church, which is the core of the whole. By talking about characteristics of space such as assembling and guiding, and the luminous and acoustic environment, concentrated expression of religious spirit is discussed.This thesis faces the expression of religious spirit, which is the special problem of the design of church, trying to provide universal guidance and reference for practices on contemporary church designs.
