This paper is supported by The fourth"Design For China"of competition and forum for environmental art design.The protection and development of cave dwellings is paid more attention today, especially in Shaanxi and Henan. In the process of protection over Shaanxi kilns, people firstly studied and protected cliff cave-dwellings and independently-built cave-dwellings, and the study is more deeply. People's cognition on pit cave-dwellings in the Central Shaanxi Plane is not universal, therefore the protection force is limited. In various studies and protections, the pit cave-dwellings in Chunhua, Yongshou and Qikou take priority, while the study and protection over pit cave-dwellings in Baishe Village, Sanyuan County is still at its infancy.From the prospect of environmental art of architecture and for the purpose of protection, development and recycle, this paper takes the vernacular architecture of pit cave-dwellings in Baishe Village, Sanyuan County, Shaanxi as object, comprehensively and deeply analyze and study its settlement pattern and dwelling pattern with methods such as summary and deduction of literatures, mapping and shooting, on-spot survey and reconnaissance, resident interview and revisit, induction and comparison of data, etc., and summarize the factors influencing formation of the pit kilns in Baishe Village as well as the positive meanings of their development till now. The paper strives to work out a more effective method for updating the protection over the pit cave-dwellings in Baishe Village through relatively systematic analysis and induction. One-sided cognition and blind demolishment of people on the pit cave-dwellings are expected to be relieved to a certain extent by actual construction and application, enabling the pit kilns last vigorously in modern society so as to preserve the real wisdom crystallization of architecture for our descendants.
